If you are unaware of the issues going on with the lobster industry here is a brief summery.

Maine lobstermen have been practicing sustainability measures for over 150 years. Protecting the health of the lobster stock and handling the entire marine environment with respect and care. The Maine Lobstermen’s Association points to “the undeniable success of the Maine lobster fishery’s existing right whale conservation measures implemented over the last 20 years. There has never been a known right whale serious injury or mortality associated with Maine lobster gear

The Maine Lobstermen’s Association filed a lawsuit against the National Marine Fisheries Service and the secretary of commerce in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, challenging what it calls “the federal government’s draconian and fundamentally flawed 10‐year whale protection plan that will all but eliminate the Maine lobster fishery, yet still fail to save endangered right whales.” The association’s filing states the service’s new Biological Opinion, released in May, is unlawful because National Marine Fisheries Service acted arbitrarily by, among other reasons, failing to rely on the best scientific information and inexplicably failing to account for the positive impact of conservation measures already adopted by the Maine lobster fishery. “Using worst case scenarios that hold Maine lobstermen accountable for right whale deaths occurring in Canada won’t help protect right whales, but it will decimate Maine’s lobster industry,” stated Patrice McCarron, the executive director of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association. Before regulations are implemented, lobstermen deserve to know that these measures will positively impact right whales and are backed by sound science.

In Maine the lobster industry is an economic generator, sustaining not only the men and women who fish but entire communities. There are approximately 4,750 commercially licensed lobstermen and 1,085 student license holders in the state. Maine’s lobster fleet directly supports more than 12,000 jobs on the water. In addition to the fisherman, the shoreside wholesale lobster sector supports an additional 5,500 jobs and generates an additional $1 billion annually.

We hope you will support this fight with your purchase, remember half of our sales will be donated to MLA. Thank you
